Important Notices for All Parents

Board of Governors

We are a nine-member Board that focuses on the future well-being of ICS and its programs, leaving the daily management to the Head of School and his staff. We wanted to introduce ourselves and give you an overview of what the ICS Board of Governors is all about.  Please see the attached Board Newsletter HERE.

Lost and Found

Dear parents/guardians: Please take some time to visit the gymnasium entrance from 14 -16 December and collect your child’s belongings. Unclaimed items will be donated during the winter break.

Thank you for your usual support.

Parent Community Link

Looking to get involved and support ICS?  Then register with the Parent Community Link (PCL)!

The PCL will match parents who want to get involved with a variety of opportunities throughout the year.

With the PCL, parents can volunteer their time and talents in a variety of ways without having to make year-long commitments. Parents can be involved in ways and at times that fit their schedules and level of interest. Whether you want to be planning regular events for the parent community or only have time for one hour at a major event on a weekend, the PCL will be your link to the school for volunteering.

The Parent Community Link’s objectives are to:

  • Provide opportunities for parent involvement such as with the PTA, Booster Club or informally through parent and community events
  • Build relationships with parents and ICS communities
  • Promote collaboration, communication and community involvement
  • Facilitate and support activities and special events to complement the academic program

How the PCL works

The PCL will be managed by the ICS Communications Office. The PCL will create a database of parents who want to be involved, with parameters outlining the dates, times and areas that each person would like to be involved. There will not be any officer positions or on-going executive roles in the PCL.

When an event needs extra support, the PCL will match parents with an event or project based on the interest that parents describe in the database. For larger events that need planning and execution, the PLC will go to the database and find parents that have indicated they would be interested in this level of commitment.

Take the Parent Interest Survey

We are very excited about the PCL. We encourage all parents to take the survey and register. Then, when an opportunity comes up, we will contact you to see if you can be involved.

You can find the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/parentcommunitylink

If you have any questions about the PCL, please email communications@icsaddis.edu.et.

Security Drills and Training

Over the break, ICS will be conducting an emergency drill with the Ethiopian Federal Police (EFP).  This drill is specifically designed for an internal threat and to practice how ICS Security and the EFP will work together and coordinate actions in the event of a real situation.  This is a regular part of our ongoing relationship with the EFP.

Additionally, ICS Security will be conducting a fire-fighting training session with our cafeteria catering company, Addis International.  This is also a regular part of our safety and security program, ensuring we are well trained to keep our students and staff safe.

Important Notices for All Parents

No School Monday 12 December, in observance of Maulid.  Have a great long weekend.

Responsible Use Policy for ICS Guest Network

Due to the recent restrictions on social media by the Ethiopian Government, we are requiring all parents, staff and students to sign a "responsible use" document.

The responsible use document states that:

  • I agree to not post, share, download or promote any website, page, file or information that may be in violation of the laws of Ethiopia.
  • I agree to not use any VPN or proxy service/anonymizer on any device on the ICS network which is not authorized by the ICS administration and/or IT Department.
  • I understand that failure to follow these terms will result in consequences such as loss of internet access and/or disciplinary action.
  • I have read and agree to follow the Responsible Use Policy

Starting on Tuesday 13 December, anyone signing onto the ICS Guest network will need to agree to the above terms, before they can be connected.  We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause, but ICS needs to comply with Ethiopian law.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

New Parent Community Link

After speaking with PTA volunteers and officers, the Booster Club, Board members and other parents, the administration is creating the Parent Community Link (PCL). The PCL will match parents who want to get involved with a variety of opportunities throughout the year. The Parent Community Link will be a great resource for the PTA, Booster Club and other groups in the years to come.

Decline in Community Involvement

We have seen a decline in parent involvement. There is a shortage of volunteers supporting community events from International Day to the PTA. Our community events rely on parent involvement to succeed.  More volunteers are needed to plan and support our events, and to run the PTA.

The PCL will be our tool for supporting community events and activities such as the monthly Community Coffee mornings, the Farmers Markets, the Spring Festival and other events by linking parents with involvement opportunities.

The purpose for the Parent Community Link:

The PCL will centralize all parent collaboration.

We encourage all parents to take the survey and provide the parameters that fit your specific interests, needs and schedule. The survey should take only five minutes to complete. Then, when an opportunity comes up, we will contact you to see if you can be involved.

You can find the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/parentcommunitylink

If you have any questions about the Parent Community Link, please contact Kristi Williams, Communications Director, at communications@icsaddis.edu.et.

Health Office, Giving Thanks

On behalf of the Health Office at ICS and the Ethiopian National Blood Bank Services we would like to extend our sincerest appreciation to all who’ve joined us in our mission to save lives here in Addis and donate blood during our blood drive last Saturday 3 December. Your time and donations are greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all blood donors’ generosity, the Ethiopian National Blood Bank (ENBB) was able to collect 67 units of blood from 67 donors. Each blood donation can help save up to three lives. The collected blood units will be able to help 201 people in need.

We would also like to express our appreciation to the ICS administration for their support. Thank you to all performers for sharing their talents with us: Paula Hanson, Olani Selamu, Yali Ruff, Ariel Cahlon, Gaya Cahlon, Yewubdar Zeleke, Tesfaye, Dagmawit Anteneh, Medkdelawit Fissehazio and the local group of traditional dancers. Many thanks to Ato Senay and his crew for the efficient and wonderful set-up they did for the event.  Thanks also to the Booster Club for providing a free lunch for all ENBB staff. Thank you to all medical providers that helped make the Health Fair possible; Suisse Clinic, Nordic Medical Centre, Paragon Physiotherapy & Sport Medicine Specialized Higher Clinic, Vision Express Clinic, International Clinic Laboratories, Afei Diagnostic Centre, Robika Pharmacy, Old Airport Pharmacy,  Gojeb Specialized, Dental Clinic and Henok Massage Therapist. Last but not least, Thanks to the ICS nurses, the students - Jorgo Tesfa, Saron Fissa and Herma Demissie - and the crew of the ENBB for their coordination and the collection of blood. They worked tirelessly to make this blood-drive a success.

Thanks again to everyone who donated blood to help save lives. We truly appreciate your help; donating the gift of life is truly special.

Holiday Bazaar

Come to the Holiday Bazaar-Blood Drive-Health Fair and “Give the Gift of life”

Booster Club and the Health Office at ICS are organizing a Holiday Bazaar including a Health Fair and Blood Drive this Saturday, 3 December from 1:00 - 5:00 PM in the Lower Commons. The Ethiopian National Blood Bank Services will be present with their professional team to manage the blood donation. We are honored to host this event with them because Addis Ababa is in a great need of blood donations as the supply in local hospitals is very low. So, please donate blood to contribute to a great cause and help save lives.  Donors will be screened before giving blood. Drinks will be provided afterwards.

There will also be a Health Fair next to the Blood Drive. Attendees can visit and meet high quality medical providers in Addis and learn about their services. Have your blood pressure and sugar levels checked. Get a free eye checkup. Receive information on services available at the International Laboratory. Or just relax with a neck/shoulder massage.

The Holiday Bazaar will offer for sale a variety of products including candles, art crafts, painting, jewelry, clothes, scarves, metal work, bamboo work, leather bags, greeting cards, face painting, henna application, manicure and pedicure by Girls Scouts, and some food products from the Farmer’s Market: meat, cheese, strawberries, honey, marmalades, chips, pastries and much more!

Come and join us at this special celebration. Donate blood and meet the best health providers in town.

A BIG Thank you for all the support for the ES Halloween Party.

The event was a HUGE success thanks to the many parent, teacher, administration and student volunteers!  A truly community event.  For the whole story, see the ES section or click HERE.

Missing and Lost Items

We recently emailed a notice about lost or missing items and how to report a lost or missing item and what our process is.  With early reporting, our security, administration and support teams can assist in the recovery.  For a copy of the full letter, click HERE.

Security Around Campus

Please be aware that there have been a number of reports about a potential scam that has happened close to campus.

A parent was approached in broad daylight at 2pm on Mauritania Road, 2 mins walk from the school by a vehicle with three men in it.  As it passed, they sprayed or spat a sticky liquid and then one got out to try to assist with a tissue.  It looked like a mugging attempt. The incident was reported it to ICS security. The security staff reacted quickly, taking the details and sending a patrol to try to identify the car.  However, they were unable to find the car at that time.

Please beware of this scam.  If anybody sprays a liquid on you or causes any other distraction, be very aware that it is likely a theft attempt. Be alert, verbally keep the assailants away by shouting, and try to take the vehicle license plate number and report it to ICS security.

Internet Challenges

We are all aware of the challenges with internet connectivity and accessing a variety of social media and other websites during this State of Emergency. At ICS we are looking into solutions to ensure that our educational website partners, such as Pamoja and Naviance can be accessed by our teachers and students while on campus. We are working with Ethiopia Telecom, our lawyer and our tech team to find a solution.

Below are some answers to common questions:

Q: Why is the Ethiopian government blocking parts of the internet?

As part of the State of Emergency, they are trying to restrict the flow of illegal and potentially dangerous information. It is important to recognize that most countries around the world block internet sites, restrict or control the flow of data, and monitor people’s use of the internet.

Q: How can I follow the rules and still do what I want and need to do online?

We are working on some techniques to give people on the ICS network access to legitimate sites. We have discussed steps with ETC and we are working on internal measures we can take. At this point, we do not have a solution yet. Please be patient.

Q: Can I use a virtual private network (VPN) to get around these restrictions?

The information that we have from our school lawyer is that there are no laws against the use of VPNs. However, VPNs may be used to hide illegal activities. Therefore, you may be scrutinized more carefully and using a VPN could lead to suspicion about the people who use them.

Q: Are VPNs allowed on the ICS campus?

No. All students and teachers have agreed to follow “The ICS Way in Technology.” This includes the following statement:

Taking care of this place:

Respecting and helping to preserve the network: I will use the network properly and will not do things that might harm or damage the system, including attempting to bypass security or crack into systems or accounts.

Any use of VPNs to bypass our firewall or filters is a violation of this agreement.

Q: So, is using a VPN going to get me in trouble?

There are problems with multiple VPNs being used on a network, and we do not want them in use on the ICS network. If we learn that you are using a VPN, you will be asked to stop. But, like the government, we are more concerned about violations of another section of The ICS Way in Technology:

Taking care of others:

Being careful and respectful to others: I will not download or bring offensive, explicit or inappropriate material into school or share it with others.

Q: What about VPNs at home or in other places?

We cannot comment on your decision to use or not use a VPN at home or in other locations. However, we want parents to know that many of our middle and high school students are aware of VPNs. They are downloading and installing them on their phones, smart devices and laptops. You should be monitoring your child’s use of ALL smart devices, and you should discuss your expectations with your sons and daughters. Did you know that research tells us that adolescents with a smart phone will check their phone an average of SIX times every night, after going to bed?? One simple way to stop that behavior is to keep your child’s phone with you during the night!

Please note: ICS will not support your use of VPNs. We will not troubleshoot VPN issues.

We have seen people damage their computers by installing VPN software. Fixing a VPN-caused issue may involve uninstalling that software and/or erasing your hard drive. Our technology team cannot help you with those types of issues.

Thank you for your cooperation!
