Throughout the year, counselors are available to meet with students and parents to discuss and help with academic issues. The counselors assist in creating a four year individualized plan of study based on graduation requirements towards their ICS High School diploma. In grade 10, counselors in conjunction with the IB Diploma coordinator and teachers assist students in selecting IB diploma courses based on students’ achievements to date and their future college and career plans. The counselors also work closely with teachers and learning support specialists to become aware of and assist students who might be struggling academically. The goal is to help students become aware of how they can play an active role in improving their learning.
Transitional programs are specifically designed for students entering grade nine from middle school, new students in all grades, and graduating seniors. At the beginning of each school year before the first day of classes, all new students and parents are invited to our New Student Orientation. A mini new student orientation program is also conducted at the beginning of the second semester. Pre-departure transition programs are also conducted for leaving students towards the end of the school year. The counselors support the transition of students who enter and leave during the remainder of school year on an individual basis.

As part of this, students’ complete a variety of learning and career inventories that link them to college and career possibilities. Students take the PSAT in grade 10 as initial preparation for college entrance standardized tests taken in their final two years of high school. Students are also guided in selecting their program of study – IB Diploma program or ICS High School Diploma with IB courses-for the final two years of high school.
Grades 11 & 12: The formal college and university selection and application program begins with the Grade 11 Student and Parent College Information evening and progresses through the college search, application and decision making stages, culminating with graduation and matriculation to college or university for the vast majority of seniors. ICS is a testing site for the SAT and ACT tests both of which are administered and supervised by the college counselor.
