Message from HoS
Addis Ababa is a thriving, growing city, and ICS Addis is keeping pace.
All our staff members work hard to make ICS Addis a premier international school in Africa, preparing students to succeed in the 21st century. Our faculty includes 120 full- or part–time teachers and other professionals, and 50+ teaching assistants and IT “superheroes.” Our math and reading/writing curricula are based on top-notch American standards. In fact, our results stand out. In 2014–2015 our students in grades 2–9 performed at or above the 85th percentile for reading and math compared with private schools in the USA. At the top end, our IB Diploma program is not selective or competitive, and we encourage all our students in grades 11 and 12 to challenge themselves with IB courses. We have a good record of providing the high support needed for all our students to be successful in the high challenge IB Diploma program.
Numbers don’t capture the spirit or culture of our school though. Teachers at ICS Addis know that learning must go far beyond what you find between the covers of books. We aim for more than high scores on tests. In classrooms from early childhood to IB science labs, students are active with learning tasks and projects that draw on the whole brain—not just that small corner devoted to rote memory. Inquiry, research, problem solving and the “Learner Profile” are embedded into instructional planning at all levels of the school. I am proud of how mindful our teachers are for providing the holistic learning that our vision and mission demand of us. As they learn individually or in groups, in and out of our classrooms, students are growing the attitudes and skills that will serve them in the 21st century.
